Scotland’s big four salmon rivers, the Dee, Spey, Tay and Tweed. The River Dee is simply the best spring salmon river in the world and it is here that many of the salmon fly fishing techniques were first developed. Flowing over 80 miles through Royal Deeside, this river offers peace and tranquillity as you cast your fly into the clear waters of this amazing river. In 2010 the River Tweed, in the Borders, produced more Atlantic salmon than any other river in Britain - 23,000 catches - and now ranks among the top salmon rivers in the world. There is also an excellent run of sea trout in the autumn. The River Spey is the home of speycasting - a casting technique used in fly fishing that requires a longer, heavier two-handed fly rod, referred to as a Spey Rod. One of the major attractions of this river is its sheer size and strength which produces excellent hard fighting salmon. The record for the largest ever rod caught salmon in Scotland is a 64lb specimen taken from the River Tay in 1922. This is one of Scotland’s most complex river systems and many of the tributaries such as the Earn, Isla, Tummel, Garry, Dochart, Lyon and Eden also offer excellent salmon fishing. It is also the river that runs 1/2 mile from our base here in Perth, if anyone knows this river, we do! In the north east of Scotland, the Don is one of the finest wild brown trout rivers in Europe and pike & coarse fishing at Loch Lomond, Loch Awe, River Annan and rivers in Dumfries & Galloway.
Coarse fishing Coarse angling includes fishing for pike, carp, perch, roach and any other freshwater fish other than salmon and trout. Scottish pike are internationally renowned for their size and quality - fish over 20 pounds are regularly caught. Loch Lomond, Loch Awe and Loch Ken produce big pike and top catches. Pike are widely distributed throughout the mainland. Carp fishing is becoming increasingly popular, especially in the central areas and in Dumfries & Galloway. Other coarse species include bream, chub, eel, gudgeon, rudd and tench. The rivers and lochs around Dumfries & Galloway offer some of the best coarse fishing in Scotland and three records for the largest chub, bream and tench have been set in the waters around Lochmaben. Sea fishing Scotland’s 11,800 km of shore line provides fantastic boat and shore fishing throughout the year. Try catching cod and pollock, both provide exciting fishing from the shore, and look out for bass which is now found regularly around the country. If you are looking for larger catch, charter a boat to take you in search of whiting, ling, conger, spurdog, coalfish, haddock, porbeagle shark and the infamous giant skate.
