MCLEANSCOTLAND
wish to thank The famous Grouse for their
help and assistance with the MCLEANSCOTLAND
trip to
USA in October 2008. A special
thanks to Beth!
THE FAMOUS GROUSE.
The Black Grouse is a blend of The
Famous Grouse with fine Islay malt whiskies
to create a smooth, peated, blended whisky.
The Black Grouse is the newest addition to
The Famous Grouse core product range. “At first taste
of this whisky you’ll be surprised by the
rich, flavoursome smoky influence of the peated malt whisky, then you’ll experience
the trademark smoothness of The Famous
Grouse. The finish is long, smoky and
aromatic and a just reward for embracing the
darker side of Scotland’s favourite whisky!”

The Glenlivet
Whisky School. A great time
was had by Paul as he spent three days at
Glenlivet with fellow whisky lovers! Welsh
and Germans made up the company. Paul McLean
(mcleanscotland) and Ian from Pitlochry.
With our resident expert Ian Logan, we had
days of nosings, tastings, touring the
distillery, taking in parts of the
distillery normal visitors cannot see.
Excellent food and drink, far too many
samples and fantastic Highland Hospitality!

World's No 1 whisky
stock heads to Edinburgh ...
October 2008. HE has devoted 36 years
of his life to putting together the world's
largest stock of whiskies.
But
Brazilian Claive Vidiz has said
goodbye to his
3384-bottle collection as it
embarks on a new life in one of the
Capital's best known tourist attractions.
The 73-year-old decided it was time to pass
his hand-picked collection on and after
eight years of deliberating who the worthy
owners should be, the array of rare whiskies
will soon take pride of place in the
refurbished Scotch Whisky Experience on
Castlehill.
Paul's note; how
much did that collection cost I wonder? And
what about how heavy it is!

WHISKY OF THE MOMENT!
an insight as to what we are drinking just now ...
well not right now!
Sexy whisky; cocktails - no doubt Liz will
run this one, being cocktails, I mean!
The ART of whisky; a collection of old
posters cards and memorabilia, to be added to.

A GOOD WHISKY BAR; I have a couple
of favourite pubs which I call "my locals".
CHRISTIES - not famed as a whisky bar but, it
has a decent enough selection to see you carried out
of the pub if you try the lot. But what makes this a
great whisky pub is the Staff. TRACY in particular
is the best Manager of a pub you can ever find. The
friendly atmosphere in this pub is hard to beat, the
regulars take the p... (the Michael) out of each
other and staff and the same banter comes from the
staff aimed at we in front of the bar. Another; THE FOUNDRY BAR Perth,
also my local. Many more whiskies to choose from,
the long
serving staff are great too here, such as Grant, Liz,
Jason, Johnny etc. A much
bigger pub this one and food all day until 9pm (ish).
Haunt of the Friday Club with Paul and the grumpy old
men (Willie, Ray & Doogie - sometimes Andy)! |
SingleMalt.tv was born in Cannes, France
in the spring of 2006, as Visionmill’s
cinematographer/founder Rob Draper wandered
the crowded exhibit halls at MIPTV, the
largest television programming conference in
the world. Within weeks, Draper had laid the
groundwork for SingleMalt.tv, a niche-market
Internet Television Channel (IPTV) designed
to appeal to both connoisseurs and casual
fans of single malt scotch. He teamed with
Narrowstep, the UK’s leading IPTV
host/provider, to launch the channel
September 29, 2006. SingleMalt.tv features a
24-hour programming schedule. Draper, a
pioneer in the field of HD, has chosen to
shoot all material for the channel in
Hi-Definition.

Angels Share The expression The Angels Share
refers to the quantity of the whiskey or wine, which
is lost to evaporation during the aging process. If
you would like a more in-depth description…
Warehousing the maturation of whisky requires that
companies have suitable storage facilities for the
large cask inventory this entails. Traditionally,
maturing whisky was accommodated in stone-built
single- or multi-storey warehouses located beside
the distillery. However, with the expansion of
production, large, centralized multi-storey
warehouses were used to increase storage capacity.
During maturation the cask is not an impermeable
container, allowing the evaporation of spirit (both
ethanol and water) and the ingress of air (oxygen).
The loss of a small percentage of spirit (called the
angels’ share) has long been an accepted part of
maturation, and this loss has been found to vary
with the environmental conditions in a warehouse.
Local, regional and national differences exist in
warehouse temperature and environment, and these can
affect both evaporative losses and the rate and
progress of maturation. My best pal can sometimes be
an angel, but then again she can sometimes not! She
doesn't really like it that much, except for a
toddy!

Whisky a Go Go; the club in USA THE WORLD
FAMOUS WHISKY A GO GO As long as there has been a
Los Angeles rock scene, there has been the Whisky A
Go-Go. An anchor on the Sunset Strip since it's
opening in 1964, the Whisky A Go-Go has played host
to rock 'n' roll's most important bands, from the
Doors, Janis Joplin, and Led Zeppelin to today's up
and coming new artists. We will be looking to do an
editorial on this soon.

NO NEED TO
FIGHT OVER IT!
What is Your
favourite dram? Some prefer single malt,
some a blend, who really cares? A Speyside,
Lowland, Highland, isles? we will endevour
to sample them all - or as many as we can,
just for you!
Paul; hard to
say, I like many, but if really pushed -
maybe an Oban or Jura. Or Dalwhinnie, or
Dimple. You need me to go right
through the alphabet! As I can.
Liz; anything
I can put into a hot toddy! We had a
special bottling of 2002 whisky for the
Maclean gathering of that year, out of the
total amount, Liz had and enjoyed around 8
bottles, all went into hot toddy's.
