Back in 1591, King James VI of Scotland, son of Mary Queen of Scots and Lord Henry Darnley, was surrounded by a rebel army in Fife, north of Edinburgh.  James took the ferry across the Firth of Forth to North Berwick and took refuge with the Carmichaels at this Tower.

James VI later became James I of England and Scotland, but granted the Tower to Sir Thomas Erskine who became Lord Dirleton, Viscount Fenton and later Earl of Kellie.  Fenton Tower is not a hotel. It is an exclusive residence that combines unique facilities with the informality of a private home. It offers outstanding service and cuisine in a secluded and secure environment.

The magnificence of Mar Hall is a fine example of Gothic Architecture. Steeped in history, the Earl of Mar Estate holds many fascinating stories, with reference made to the likes of Mary Queen of Scot and Robert the Bruce. Built in 1828, the present Mar Hall was constructed 100 years after the famous Earl's death and, after a massive restoration, its owners proudly present the city with a precious gem. Undoubtedly one of Scotland's premier luxury hotels, near Glasgow, 53 luxurious and individually designed suites with breathtaking views of the Kilpatrick Hills. In addition, 5 Star Mar Hall introduces the first Aveda Concept Spa in the UK.
