MCLEANSCOTLAND we are local Scots who pride ourselves on showing you the nooks & crannies other tours companies pass on by.   We can show you those hidden gems even Scots do not know!  McLean Scotland Perthshire and Speyside whisky tours self drive and escorted whiskey tours of Scotland

Perth and Speyside McLean Scotland Whisky Tour

Day one Arrive at the airport where our coach will meet you.  Transfer you directly to Tullibardine distillery for a visit - a fine single Highland malt.  Tullibardine Distillery nestles at the foot of the Ochil Hills in Perthshire, where the Highlands of Scotland begin.  These hills are renowned for the crystal purity of their spring water.  The distillery draws it's water from the same source which fed the first public brewery in Scotland and from where King James IV purchased beer to celebrate his coronation in 1488.  Today Tullibardine (built on the site of the brewery) reigns supreme as a fine malt whisky of majestic qualities.   It is considered “eminently quaffable”.  We will have a light lunch here at Tullibardine.  Our first day ends in Perth where you stay in a City Centre hotel overnight.   B&B.  Perth's origins lay in the fort the Romans built at Bertha in about AD83 to act as a supply base for their occasional occupation of north eastern Scotland.    Perth has two green common areas: North and South Inch, North Inch achieved a certain infamy as the site of the Battle of the Inch, organised by Robert III in 1396. The city has a wonderful mix of history and modern facilities, so easy to walk around as it is so wee!  As an added bonus here in Perth, depending on time of year, you may take a visit to the home of a personal friend of ours "Chef" Brian.   Brian has been collecting whisky miniatures and associated whisky items for over thirty years and has amassed an amazing collection of thousands of bottles!  Valued by Sotherbys some years ago at well over £60,000.

Day two full Scottish breakfast, then transfer to Inverness via Speyside.  Your first stop will be a distillery tour in Speyside, The Glenfiddich Connoisseur Tour.  After a film on Glenfiddich's history, the senior guides take you on an in-depth tour of the distillery, which includes a visit to the atmospheric Solera warehouse.  The tour ends with a tutored nosing and tasting session of the finest whiskies.  This tour will last approximately 2.5 hours.   You then do it all over again!  This time to Aberlour, where you take the tour then go on further for nosing and tasting, the whole tour taking just over two hours.   Your distillery visits will be followed by a scenic drive to Inverness, where you visit Culloden Battlefield, scene of the tragic defeat of Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1746.  Then to your hotel, hopefully still with some free time in the city to explore.  Overnight Inverness B&B.

Day three follow the shores of Loch Ness to Urquhart Castle for a visit.    Opinions differ as to whether Urquhart Castle was originally the site of a Pictish fort dating back to a visit by St Columba in 597 but there was certainly a Pictish settlement in the area at the time.   A popular castle to visit and easy to explore.  Set out again down the shores of Loch Ness all the way to Spean Bridge where you stop for refreshments at the woolen mill.  Spean Bridge's early claim to military fame came in 1745, when during the first skirmish in the conflict that culminated in failure for the Jacobites the following year at Culloden, a handful of noisy highlanders persuaded a very much larger force of government troops to run away! Then travelling through Glen spen we arrive at Dalwhinnie Distillery.  Here you will have an in depth tour followed by nosings and tastings of 4 or 5 malts.  The highest distillery in Scotland stands in an area steeped in history.  The placename itself means 'meeting place', where cattle drovers and smugglers met on their way to markets in the south.  The distillery was originally named Strathspey when it was established during the whisky boom of the late 1890s by two men from Kingussie.  They chose the site for its' access to a supply of clear spring water from Lochan-Doire-Uaine, above the snow line and abundant peat from the surrounding moors.  After your in-depth distillery visit, you stop for lunch in the village at The Inn at Loch Ericht.  Soup and sandwhiches at the Inn. Your day ends back at Inverness.  B&B

Day four leave Inverness and head south to your first stop at Edradour Distillery, where you take a tour and a tasse of one of their single malts.  This is in a beautiful setting on the hills above Pitlochry, it is the smallest distillery in Scotland.  On to Perth again, stop here briefly to allow for lunch - in a pub of course, then on to Glasgow where you spend the night.   B&B.   Glasgow has an amazing portfolio of more than twenty museums and galleries – many of them free – including the unique Burrell Collection, stunning Mackintosh House and cool and contemporary Gallery of Modern Art.  Shopping is an absolute delight in Glasgow.  Not only is it tops for shops but its' compact city centre and grid system makes it easy to navigate during serious retail therapy!  A Taste of the Good Life - you can quite literally eat your way round the world in Glasgow as the city’s café culture from the style & sushi bars of the Merchant City to the restaurants and brasseries in the hip West-End.   We will be offering a trip to a famous local pub whilst in Glasgow, The SCOTIA BAR, maybe live traditional music, certainly it will be full of locals to have some banter with!  Many more details will be in your tour notes.

Day five transfer to airport for the flight home.
