Inverness - the Capital of the Highlands.

Staying in the Highlands is a scenic delight, so much scenery, ever changing colours, fantastic people and so much to see and visit. Let us take you there and give you our "local knowledge". The origins of Inverness lie on its western edge at the now wooded crag of Craig Phadrig. A fortress atop this crag was a capital of the Pictish kings from as early as the 400s. In about 580 Craig Phadrig was the stronghold of the Pictish King Brude when St Columba embarked on his quest to convert the Picts to Christianity. It is said that King Brude denied St Columba entry when he arrived at Craig Phadrig: but the gates opened themselves when Columba knocked. Brude, suitably impressed, quickly converted with his people.

Inverness cathedral

Inverness Cathedral  was built between 1866 and 1869 by architect, Alexander Ross. Gothic in style, the exterior of the cathedral tends to attract slightly unflattering comments in architectural guides, and there is no denying that it would have looked rather prettier, and still more imposing, had the funds stretched to include the 30m spires the architect originally intended to top off the west towers. Having said that, the main west doorway and its surrounds are truly magnificent, and provide a fitting entrance to a building which is much more appealing internally than externally.

The Castle Tavern, (above) owned and run by Maclean's of course, great food and drinks, many real ales too and great whiskies! for a lively night try Johnny Foxes Irish pub, live music every night and great pub food. Another great night out instore at Hootananny! The bar at the Glen Mhor hotel is really good. RESTAURANTS again, so many, our favourite is the Mustard seed. Abstract on Ness Bank and the Riverside Restaurant, all good.  The red stone Inverness Castle you see today was built in the 1830s to house courts and administrative buildings. In Scotland; a new building! Also a good visit is shown below; Dunrobin castle. Great castle to tour around with superb gardens and a falconry display in the summer months. We can offer so much for you here in Inverness, to the traveller without a car and, for those of you with a car! On our feature page are just some ideas and suggestions, there are of course, so many more!  The riverside walks are really nice, pleasant and enjoyable. The Victorian Market in the centre is a good place for that unique wee gift, and of course the pubs and restaurants abound everywhere!
